  9.   I just sat down with GEOS 2.0 a bit ago, but I'm already annoyed (a bit)...

  11.  I've got all my applications, desk accs, fonnts, etc. on a 1581 disk and was
  12.   planning to use the '41 for a data drive. But every time I enter an
  13.   application, the system seems to lose track of the fact that yes! there
  14.   is another drive connected... And so I'm stuck saving to the 1581....

  16.  Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? I've got both DESKTOP 2.0 and
  17.   CONFIGURE 2.0 on the 1581, nothing onn the 1541.

  19.  If I could just get this going, I'd be in geoHeaven... I absolutely love
  20.   this little 1581... Sitting next to my monster 1541s, you'd never guess
  21.   that it stores 5x more than one of them!

  35.    Unfortunately, in order to use a mixed drive system the way you want, with
  36. data on one drive type, and programs on another, you need a 1764 REU. GEOS only
  37. has room for one set of drive parameters at a time.  With the REU in place,
  38. these parameters are automatically stored there, and dynamically fetched as
  39. needed.  As far back as GEOS 1.3, BSW consolidated all the drivespecific code
  40. into a contiguous block of memory, and it was widely believed that disk drivers
  41. would be supplied as separate files.  In fact, at least one version of the BSW
  42. Convert program has a menu entry for disk drivers, and a GEOS file type was
  43. reserved for them.  But they never implemented them, instead keeping all the
  44. driver code inside the deskTop, which can dynamically fetch what it needs. 
  45. Once an application is loaded, though, the deskTop is out, and without an REU,
  46. only the applications home drive-type can be accessed.
  47.    The only redeeming factor here is that at least the 1581 is big enough that
  48. you *can* store your programs and data on it.  The whole thing is strangely
  49. reminiscent of IBM, where every added bit of functionality winds up requiring
  50. more hardware to be practical.

  61.    Oh well, at least I know I'm not goofy in the head... It seems to me
  62.   that the 2.0 user's manual doesn't exactly SCREAM this fact out at you,
  63.   unless I missed a chapter or two...

  65.    Sigh. I guess an REU isn't such a bad idea, anyways... If anything, it's
  66.   a good excuse to get one... Then, hopefully, I'll be able to get the most
  67.   out of GEOS. I'm used to using folders, partitions etc. on an ST and
  68.   I guess I'm on an unending quest for organization...

  71.   log on, post the message, do a UST, notice 2 sysops online... So I go
  72.   DL a font editor, come back, and voila! a response...!

  83.    We aims to please <grin>.  All around, good timing.
  84.    I think the REU requirement is documented *somewhere*, but I haven't run
  85. across it either.
  86.    I love my 1581, too.  You've reminded me that I wish GEOS made better use of
  87. it.  It's annoying that there's absolutely no support for 1581 partitions,
  88. which would have made nifty folders!  Even more annoying is the fact that you
  89. can't get more than 17 pages, or 136 files, on a GEOS 1581 disk. 136 files is
  90. more than you'll need for most uses, but I have a *lot* of fonts, and the disks
  91. they're stored on have plenty of space left, but no way to put more files on,
  92. since GEOS assumes everything has the same directory capacity as a 1541, and
  93. can't be made to listen to reason.
  94.    I'm told one of the commercial copy-protection-busting outfits has just come
  95. out with a new version of their product that'll produce 1581 boot disks for
  96. GEOS.

  108.  the 1581's partitioning as subdirectories... It would be a big step in
  109.  keeping things organized, and also fill in one of the things that GEOS
  110.  lacks when compared to 16 bit desktops...{_

  112.     On the matter of the 1581... I really wish that software companies
  113.   would acknowledge the variety! of hardware out there for the 64. Like,
  114.   for instance, I just bought Neuromancer 2 days ago. Has a fastload, but
  115.   the disk is not protected... However, it's either reading files in
  116.   thru direct block-reads, or has a directory -somewhere- on the disk...
  117.   Anyways, my point is: Why? If they'd left all the files as FILES, it
  118.   may (!) have slowed down their fastload a bit... But I could have sat
  119.   down here, copied all of the files over to a 1581 disk, disabled their
  120.   fastdos (an option they seem to have forgotten), and off I would have
  121.   gone... No disk swaps! Grrr... Also, implementation of the 1351 mouse
  122.   in proportional mode would have been nice... I've had enough moving
  123.   a pointer around with a joystick in my first days with GEOS 1.?...
